Exclusive Interview: Messeca designers Nicole Ortega & Pablo Delgado
When I see the Messeca line at shoe shows and hang with brand creators Nicole Ortega and Pablo Delgado I see a brand that is destined for indie greatness. They seem to have a combination of all the right stuff : innovation, edginess, good business skills and a passion for shoes. All of which are key ingredients for building a brand. I love this line for so many reasons, but I think the main one is that this line just screams urban dweller which make it a perfect fit for Ashbury Skies.
Q: What inspires you when designing your collection?
A perfect blend of all the things that surround our day-to-day lives and all the things we fantasize about.
When we design, the girl we have in mind is:
The everyday girl who is never satisfied.
In life we are most inspired by:
Pablo - Faith
Nicole - Survivors
At the moment, we are obsessed with:
P - The Hunger Games.
N - The Brooklyn Public Library & Isabel Marant Sneakers.

The best advice we have ever got is:
P - Follow your dreams and never give up!
N - Sometimes you have to take two steps back to leap forward and always remember your not doing it for the money.

Coffee!! We have a morning ritual, at 9:00 a.m. we go down to our local bodega, get coffee, chat with the employees (hey Ferry & Linda!!!) & crack some jokes. It’s how we start every work day.
Which of your personal possessions most clearly yells “fashion victim”?:
P - McQueen Kilt
N - Hello Kitty Snow Boots
If you couldn’t design shoes and you could have any other job, what would it be?
P - An Oscar nominated actor.
N - I would love to be involved with hip-hop music….anything Wu-Tang, Nas, Jay-Z, Gangstarr, Mos Def: the classics. It’s my secret love.
