  • Meet and greet with Dan Sullivan, creator of Irregular Choice

We are always on the lookout for independent designers that have the fashion DNA that work with our highly curated, one of a kind, shoe assortment. One could call us fashion treasure seekers. When we find the balance of creativity and a seasoned eye in a designer we just can’t restrain our enthusiasm. We are captivated by British label, Irregular Choice. Founder and designer Dan Sullivan has a knack for fusing textures and colors, along with a quirky sense of humor in his shoe design. His not-so-predictable holiday creation, the Santa Baby, has our indie shoe community clicking, sharing, and pinning like mad. This is the first of a collection of shoes that we will be delivering from Irregular Choice over the next few months.

Designer Dan Sullivan was nice enough to answer a few questions starting with his inspiration for his designs, his current obsessions, along with some great life advise.

We are really excited to have your line on Ashbury Skies. We love your designs and are thrilled to be one of the handful of stores in the US carrying your shoes. Tell us more about the Santa shoe and your character bottoms.  Where the heck did you come up with this brilliant concept?I’ve always loved the vintage hand carved wooden wedges that told a story of a farmyard, beach scene, etc. And over the years I have used some hand carved wooded heels, and I wanted to take this concept on to the next level. So in 2010 I designed an Ice Cream heel, and it received an amazing reaction, and then that was followed up with the Bunny, then the gnome, etc..But in China where we make the heels, they had never heard of a gnome before, so they either called it the old man heel, or the Father Christmas heel. And I thought great, lets make him into father Christmas (so I can’t really take all the credit for this one). I love Christmas and this was a great way to celebrate it. I have a few new characters coming out for Spring Summer 14, and I am working on taking this concept a little further for Fall/Winter 14, with a whole new take on it, which should be interesting?! My collection is inspired by:

When I design, the girl I have in mind is: My wife, she sums up Irregular Choice to me. She is a great muse and is the essence of the Irregular Choice customer. She’s someone who wants to have fun with fashion, but not to be too gimmicky, whilst having class. And being a mum it’s not always about the sky scraper heels, but having wearable shoes that can still get the ‘Wow!’ out of passers by, even on the school run! What I love about Irregular Choice is that there is no customer age group. You can't be too young or too old. We are about having fun with shoes, and that crosses all ages and fashions.

In life I am most inspired by:

Music. I think like a lot of people it can inspire me when I am down, and bring out creativity when there is a low. Whilst it can swing your mood to good or bad, depending on the song.  It is seldom these days that I hear a current track that inspires me, but I love listening to older music and thinking how did they come up with that in those days. How did they get inspiration to write such ground breaking music when the world was what it was. That creativity to me is amazingly inspiring.

At the moment, I am obsessed with:

It’s a bit of a difficult question for me, as I don’t really have an obsessive nature. Apart from maybe in work, I drive my development team knutz trying to get something made and into production, even though I am constantly told it can’t be done, and the more they say it can’t be achieved the more obsessive I get over making it work. I’ve learnt to not listen to people when they say ‘it can’t be done’, until I have explored every avenue for myself and added a bit of lateral thinking to it. And 9 times out of 10 there IS a way.

    I can’t go a day without:

Chocolate! I love Chocolate and I don’t think there has been a day in decades that I wouldn’t have had at least one bar. I don’t really crave too much else, but I need my Chocolate treat, and look forward to it daily. I’m like an x-smoker, I crave one all the time, and for health reasons I need to hold myself in check. But it would be hard for me to go a day without this fix!

The best advice I have ever got is:

‘If you are going to do a job, then do it right, if your not going to do it right then you must not love what you are doing, so go find something that inspires you to do it to the best of your ability’, it is something my granddad told me when I was a kid. I have been given a lot of great pieces of advice over the years, but that one always stuck with me. I was fortunate at a young age to be able to find something that I could be passionate about and make a living from, and maybe if I didn’t have that advice in the back of my head then I could of ended up on a different path.

Fav on my playlist right now is:

Amanda Leah, Follow me. I use to play it from my dads records when I was a kid, but I couldn’t remember for ages what it was called, and then recently I finally tracked it down. So at the moment I am enjoying listening to it over and over.

If I could go back in time and bring back one trend it would be:

I swing from one to another, as I find passion in different eras and fashions then get bored and start getting inspired by another, I’m quite eclectic with different trends and fashions. At the moment I am very into the 20’s, maybe it's the great styling over the last few years on Boardwalk Empire, but that was such a great era for men and women. Class and sophistication, blended with uniqueness.

My favorite form of caffeine is:

I have never liked Tea or Coffee – Unusual for an Englishman! Therefore I have to rely on Coke. I am trying to cut it out, but sometimes you just need the caffeine shot. There are so many days I wish I could drink coffee, just to wake me up and get me going. But unfortunately I am destined to live with just my daily lunchtime Coke.

If you couldn’t design shoes and you could have any other job, what would it be?

I love creative writing. I love getting lost in creating characters, stories and new worlds. And one day I will find the time to dedicate to it!
